Common Uses Of The Hard Disk Drives

Hard disk drive is the most essential part of any computer. Various functions of HDD are:
Storage
The main purpose of hard disk drive is to store and save digital information in large amounts. The disk drive accomplishes this task by writing the data in binary form on a series of magnetic platters. The magnetic profile can be read when the platters spin. The HDDs are connected to the motherboard of your computer. All of your data displayed on screen including music, pictures, text and videos are stored on HDD. Users always desire large hard disks so that they can store huge amounts of data without any problem.
Operating System
Your computer's HDD also contains the operating system for your computer. The portion of the disk that contains your operating system is called the startup disk. This portion of the disk is accessed by your computer when you switch the computer on. It boots the operating system to display the desktop interface. The users who prefer advanced computing often maintain a separate disk drive for the operating system. Maintaining a separate HDD for operating system improves the overall performance of the system. It also allows you to upgrade or change your operating system without transferring data on other devices.
Archiving
Disk drives are used for long-termed storage of the digital information. The servers maintain huge amounts of digital information and allow their access to multiple computers and devices through a network. Hard drives are also commonly used for the purpose of archiving information on small scales. Many universities, scientific institutions and offices back up their data on one centrally located hard drive.
Data Transfer
Since a past few years, portable and small-sized hard disks called 'Mobile HDDs' have gained popularity. These small disks are very convenient for transfer of huge amounts of data. The users can easily transport data through these hard disks by attaching them to their desired computers and copy data from one hard disk to another. Some devices are powered through the USB connection and are called 'bus powered' hard drives. You can also connect an external hard drive through 'firewire' to boost the performance of your drive. High speed connections like IEEE 1394 interface can increase the overall performance of your external disk drive.
Hard Disks in Other Devices
Since a past few years, a major change has been observed regarding the usability and purpose of the HDDs. Now these drives are often integrated into all kinds of electronic devices and machines. Nowadays, portable music players also use hard hard drives to store music, pictures and videos. Mobile phones also use disk drives to store call data, phone numbers, pictures, music and the operating systems. New applications for HDDs include cars, where you can load maps and navigation system. With the HDDs you can also store music digitally in your car's computer.
